Standing for the Rights of Protestors, Politicians, and Public Officials

• The League stood in firm support of the right to protest and condemned violence against activists in Boulder, CO, and federal use of force in Los Angeles County, CA.

• The League also expressed concern at the indictment of Representative Monica McIver and the violent removal of Senator Alex Padilla from a press conference. Both incidents, as well as the Los Angeles protests, are connected to the Trump administration’s attacks on the migrant community.

• LWV spoke out about President Trump’s direction to the Department of Justice to investigate his political rival, former President Biden.

• LWVUS and LWV of Minnesota condemned the tragic political assassination of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her family, as well as the shooting of Senator John Hoffman and his family, stating, “political violence has no place in our democracy.”

Defending Democracy in the Courts

• The League of Women Voters of Florida and partners acted to block key provisions of a bill that puts sweeping restrictions on the state’s ballot initiative process.

• LWV and partners also filed legal briefs urging federal courts to invalidate an illegal executive order that seeks to revoke birthright citizenship.

• The League of Women Voters of North Carolina and partners seek to intervene in a lawsuit that wrongly challenges the eligibility of more than 200,000 voters.
